How to Write a Strategic Plan for a Church

Like any other organization, churches have the responsibility to plan strategically to obtain their goals. The ability for a church to have an action plan and utilize its resources well is especially important because its financial resources come from within the congregation. If a church does not follow through on things it promises such as a youth program or Sunday school classes, and especially drawing new members, leaders may find themselves in a bind as attendees migrate elsewhere. Spending time developing a strategic plan should be on the forefront of any church leader's mind.

Things You'll Need

  • Financial projection
    • 1

Have a meeting of the minds with the Elders, Pastor, church leaders and anyone else who will be involved in the decision-making for the church.

    • 2

Decide on which elements to focus on. It is necessary to start small and focus on specific goals to achieve in a given time period. For example, a church might decide to focus in the short term on drawing new members and developing a Sunday school curriculum.

    • 3

Develop an action plan to achieve the goals that you wish to focus upon. If one of the immediate goals is to draw new members to the church, perhaps you will plan some community events so locals become aware of your presence. Some churches offer summer camp to local children in hopes of interesting the whole family. Other churches simply focus on advertising through the use of radio, television and billboard ads. Break your action plan into achievable steps so you are doing things with purpose.

    • 4

Determine the cost of the activities you plan to engage in. You will not be able to obtain your goals if you cannot afford to do so. Research each activity you plan to engage in and make sure you will have the funds to support it. Raising funds may have to be part of your action plan as well. If this is the case you will probably have to project what you think your financial resources will be. You can do this by looking at the offerings from the previous year and averaging that based on the current number of members you have.

    • 5

Assign specific tasks to individuals to help you achieve your goals. You may want to define roles here as well so each person knows exactly what he is responsible for

    • 6

Create deadlines by which specific tasks must be accomplished. If a task is not completed within the specified time frame, re-evaluate your plan and modify things to help you stay in line with your goal.
